Santa Clara Pueblo Hand Coiled Carved Avanyu Pottery

Effie Garcia (b. 1954 at Santa Clara) and her husband Orville Garcia (from Acoma) collaborate to design, shape, polish, and fire their unique pottery. As the daughter of Victoria Gutierrez and granddaughter of Faustina Gutierrez and Rosita Velarde, Effie learned her craft from some of the best, among them her sisters Ethel Yazza and Sally Gutierrez and brother Eugene Gutierrez. She now devotes her time to pottery production while also passing her techniques and knowledge to her grandchildren, Brooklyn and Derrick. Effie and Orville have achieved numerous awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market since 1983, creating red and black elegant shapes with precise edges and deep-carved designs.
