Vernon Haskie, a respected Navajo jeweler from Lukachukai, Arizona, began learning silversmithing from his father, Leonard Haskie, who crafted and sold jewelry. Vernon created his first pendant at age nine and later earned an associate degree in life sciences from Navajo Community College and a biology degree from the University of New Mexico in 1996. Despite limited formal art training, he mastered jewelry-making through practice, experimentation, and guidance from peers. Transitioning from hobbyist to professional in 1998, Vernon developed a distinctive style featuring multidimensional inlay with natural turquoise and coral, often incorporating traditional Navajo motifs like cornstalks and turtles. His work reflects the natural beauty of Navajo land and honors the Earth through ceremonies that balance material use. Vernon’s award-winning silver and gold pieces have been showcased at major Native arts events and are held in prestigious museums and private collections.
