Verla Dewakuku became an active potter in the early 1970s, even though she was born in 1932. From First Mesa, she was known for her polychrome bowls, jars and plates. Her favorite designs were rainbirds, rain clouds, parrot tail feathers, Twin War Gods footprints and Sikyátki Revival designs.
